Here's an unpursued lead on Ferrie's early career:

By the end of 1948, Ferrie's employer, Jeda Oil and Drilling, was in trouble and about to go under. Further, Ferrie was in a heap of trouble with Col. Harry A. Webb of the Cleveland CAP. By December, he was living in Tampa and experiencing signs of instability. He claimed to be married with two dependents, but he was actually single and living out of the YMCA on Zack Street. There is an unconfirmed report that Ferrie, who had been under psychoanalysis since 1944, suffered a nervous breakdown while in Florida. He returned to Cleveland in April 1949. There is little known about this 5-month period in his life.
