       While black and white liberal groups within the city protested the raids on SCEF, that organization's left-wing reputation was reinforced by the latest round of official red-baiting. SCEF remained an outsider to most civil rights groups within New Orleans, as it did to the national organizations of the NAACP and CORE. Local activists found the "Communist" smear simply too controversial to contest.
